About me
Freddie Hughes is a student at the royal northern college of music currently in the 3rd year of his undergraduate degree studying a BMus in performance as a tenor trombonist. Originally from Anglesey in north wales, he first began playing the trombone in 2017 at the age of 14, receiving lessons from his local music service teacher. He later joined his local youth brass band who were highly successful during his time there, reaching 3rd place in the European youth brass band championships representing Wales. He later progressed to the main band, Beaumaris silver band, where he enjoyed many successes. It was at this time he began taking lessons with the principal trombone of the royal Liverpool philharmonic, Simon Cowen. With the help of regular lessons with Simon, Freddie was able to take his trombone playing to another level. Eventually allowing him to earn a scholarship to attend the RNCM. He began his studies under the tuition of the principal trombone of the Welsh National Opera, Roger Cutts. Then in his second year he switched, and received tuition from the second trombone of the BBC philharmonic orchestra, Gary Macphee. Currently in his third year, he is still receiving tuition from Gary Macphee, but has also began taking lessons with Carol Jarvis. He is also doubling as a bass trombone player, so is receiving tuition from Christian Jones, the principal bass trombonist of Opera north. He has also had the pleasure of learning from many highly esteemed visiting tutors such as Peter Steiner, Chris Augustine, Matt Lewis, Emma Bassett, Emily white, John Kenny and Marshall Gilkes. One of Freddie’s most recent successes includes winning the BBC philharmonic PES (profession experience scheme). Freddie will be allocated a member of the orchestra to help guide him through the experience, if he proves himself particularly capable he may have the chance to be offered professional freelance work with the orchestra.
